Neeraj Chopra and Manu Bhaker Gear Up in Europe for 2026 Sporting Challenge

India’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games have entered a crucial phase as two of the country’s biggest sporting icons, Neeraj Chopra and Manu Bhaker, head to Europe for specialized training assignments. Their overseas camps, approved by the Mission Olympic Cell under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), underline India’s growing commitment to scientific preparation and elite athlete management ahead of major international competitions.

The decision comes at a significant time for Indian sports. With the Commonwealth Games scheduled in Glasgow and the Asian Games set to take place in Aichi-Nagoya later in 2026, the focus is firmly on ensuring that India’s medal hopefuls are physically sharp, mentally prepared, and technically refined.

Neeraj Chopra’s Return Through Switzerland

For Neeraj Chopra, the Switzerland training block represents far more than a routine overseas camp. The Olympic gold medallist and world champion is currently recovering from a back injury and has been undergoing rehabilitation in Türkiye. According to approved plans, Chopra will train at the Olympic Training Centre in Bienne, Switzerland, from May 25 to July 10.

The 47-day camp is expected to help him rebuild rhythm and consistency after a challenging period affected by injury concerns. Reports suggest that the Indian star has been carefully managing his workload to ensure long-term fitness, especially after a demanding international calendar over the past few seasons.

Bienne is not unfamiliar territory for Chopra. The Swiss training centre has played an important role in his earlier preparations and offers world-class facilities tailored for elite athletes. The structured environment, advanced recovery support, and technical training opportunities make it one of Europe’s preferred destinations for Olympic-level competitors.

Chopra will travel with his coach Jai Choudhary and long-time physiotherapist Ishaan Marwaha. The Sports Authority of India has sanctioned travel, accommodation, medical support, insurance, and even additional baggage allowance for javelin equipment and treatment facilities.

The upcoming season carries enormous importance for the Indian athlete. Chopra has already established himself as one of the greatest track-and-field athletes India has ever produced. His achievements include Olympic gold in Tokyo, Olympic silver in Paris, World Championship success, and Commonwealth and Asian Games titles.

However, expectations remain high, and the 2026 season offers another opportunity to reaffirm his dominance in international javelin.

Manu Bhaker’s Italian Mission

While Chopra focuses on rebuilding form in athletics, Manu Bhaker is sharpening her precision in Italy. The double Olympic medallist has received approval for a foreign training program in Lucca, Italy, from May 13 to May 22. She will be accompanied by coach Jaspal Rana and physiotherapist Snehil Khurana.

Bhaker’s rise has transformed Indian shooting over the last few years. Her performances at the Paris Olympics elevated her to national icon status, especially after becoming the first Indian athlete in the post-independence era to win two medals in a single Olympic edition.

The Italian training assignment is expected to help her fine-tune preparation for the Asian Games, where she will compete in the women’s 10m air pistol and 25m pistol events. Since shooting has been omitted from the 2026 Commonwealth Games program, the Asian Games become her primary target this season.

Lucca offers high-quality shooting ranges and controlled competitive environments that are ideal for elite shooters. Modern shooting training increasingly depends on consistency under pressure, biomechanics, mental conditioning, and data-driven analysis. Overseas exposure camps allow athletes to train in environments similar to global championship settings, reducing performance pressure during actual competitions.

Bhaker’s association with coach Jaspal Rana has also become a major talking point in Indian shooting. Rana, himself one of India’s greatest shooters, has played a vital role in refining Bhaker’s technical and psychological preparation.

India’s Growing Focus on Elite Athlete Preparation

The approval of foreign training camps for elite athletes reflects a broader shift in India’s sports culture. Over the last decade, Indian sporting authorities have increasingly emphasized scientific preparation, international exposure, recovery management, and specialized coaching support.

The TOPS initiative has emerged as a major pillar in this transformation. By funding overseas camps, advanced recovery programs, nutrition, and technical assistance, the scheme aims to bridge the gap between Indian athletes and global sporting powerhouses.

The Mission Olympic Cell’s support for athletes like Neeraj Chopra and Manu Bhaker demonstrates a targeted approach where medal contenders receive customized preparation plans rather than generic training programs.

This strategy has already produced visible results across sports such as athletics, shooting, badminton, wrestling, and boxing. Indian athletes are now spending more time training abroad, competing in high-level international events, and using sports science as an essential part of preparation.

High Expectations Ahead of 2026

The pressure on both athletes will be immense as India eyes a strong medal tally in 2026. Neeraj Chopra remains one of the country’s most dependable gold-medal prospects in athletics, while Manu Bhaker continues to lead India’s shooting revolution.

For Chopra, the challenge lies in returning to peak condition after injury setbacks and maintaining his consistency against an increasingly competitive global field. For Bhaker, the task will be to sustain the momentum generated by her Olympic success and convert that confidence into Asian Games medals.

Their journeys to Switzerland and Italy are not merely training trips. They symbolize India’s ambitions as a rising sporting nation determined to compete consistently at the highest level.

As preparations intensify, millions of Indian fans will closely follow every update from Europe, hoping these camps become the foundation for another golden chapter in Indian sporting history.
